Millersville
In December 1649, the first European settlement in Anne Arundel County was called Providence by the Puritans who settled on the north shore of the Severn River opposite present-day Annapolis. Seventeen years earlier, Cecil Calvert and his father, George, envisioned a colony free of religious strife, a place where fellow Roman Catholic royalists could practice their beliefs freely. Cecil Calvert’s father-in-law, Thomas Arundel, helped finance the endeavor. After the death of Calvert’s wife, the Maryland General Assembly created Anne Arundel County in 1650 and named it after her. Millersville was also named after an early European settler – George Miller.

Providence and other European settlements throughout the Chesapeake colonies relied upon tobacco as their main cash crop. Although slavery was sanctioned at that time, the changes brought by the Civil War forced local farmers to diversify. The completion of the Annapolis and Elkridge Railroad was also crucial in the industrialization of Anne Arundel County.

Today, Anne Arundel County continues to attract new residents because of its central location, its superior transportation networks, and the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of its magnificent shoreline. Millersville residents are just minutes away from Annapolis, home of the United States Naval Academy and known as the sailing capital of the world. The Maryland Statehouse, located in Annapolis, is the oldest statehouse in the United States still in legislative use.

As the nations capital, Washington D.C. is hard to beat as a premier cultural destination. The White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian Institute and numerous other museums, monuments and national landmarks provide a historical perspective in the development of a democratic nation.

Nearby Baltimore also offers an intriguing environment complete with the Maryland Science Center, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Baltimore Aquarium, the Inner Harbor and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Easy access from Millersville makes this “Golden Triangle” an adventure too exciting to miss.
